Good Q&A about AGOL

Salam...

I want to share with you some of my colleague's answers when one person ask him about ArcGIS Online for Organization:

Q1. What is the difference in terms of functionality between ArcGIS Online and GIS for Server.

If you’re looking for differentiation between ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS for Server, I would say:

•       ArcGIS Online is a cloud-based, collaborative content management system lets you manage geographical information in a secure and configurable environment where the backend being managed by Esri.
•       ArcGIS Server is an application server that able to host GIS services (map, feature, mobile, kml, network, geoprocessing etc.).
•       Customers who already has ArcGIS Server can still leverage it by using ArcGIS Online to provide new user experience of the GIS services by allowing these services be discoverable, create & share webmaps in a self-service way, really to the point that accessible to non-GIS users.

Q2. Will I be able to create a map service using ArcGIS Online. If yes then please show me how. I tried the share my map function but  I cannot find any option to share my map as a service.

•       As of now, it supports map (tile), feature and geocoding service. There’re a number of ways to publish these services:
•       Use ArcGIS Desktop to publish maps as map(tile) and feature (capability of query, add, update & delete) services.
•       Use Esri Maps for Office to geocode excel spreadsheet and publish it as feature service.

Look for additional functions & features that has been just released in blogs.esri.com. In the future, they will provide more capabilities including network and geo-processing services.

Q3.  Will I able to add multiple layers using ArGIS online and ArcGIS API for Javascript?

•       All of the software development kits for web and mobile have been or in the process of being extended to the searching, collaborating interactions with ArcGIS Online. Yes, ArcGIS API for JavaScript can be used to interact with contents hosted or registered in AGOL.
•       We also have ArcGIS Online API allowing application developers to access and work with ArcGIS Online. It includes ArcGIS Online Portal API, ArcGIS Online content and task services that are published by Esri, and ArcGIS Online hosted services that are published by subscribing organizations.

Besides that, you may want to check for couple of whitepapers and video streams that can be beneficial to you and your customers in understanding ArcGIS Online for Organization:
